England’s hopes of ending a 55-year wait for a major trophy were dashed when they lost 3-2 on penalties to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium.
Despite two saves from Jordan Pickford, missed penalties by Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka proved decisive.
England made a dream start in their first men’s final since 1966, scoring in the second minute, Luke Shaw volleying in superbly after a quick counter.
But Italy gradually took control of the game and equalized midway through the second half when Leonardo Bonucci stabbed in from close range after a scramble from a corner.
England struggled to regain their composure but held on to force extra time, and after another tense 30 minutes, penalties were required to separate the two sides.
And in only the second European Championship final to be decided by penalty kicks, Italy triumphed, ending England’s incredible run at the tournament.
